What Is a Strategic Plan?

A strategic plan is the roadmap that helps an organizations visions become actions. It answers three core questions: Where are we now? Where do we want to go? And how will we get there?

Developing a strong strategic plan begins with research and reflection. Teams look at their current situation and analyze what they’ re doing well, things they could improve, future opportunities, and possible risk. This then helps clarify their mission, values, and identify measurable goals.

From there, strategies and tactics are created to bring those goals to life through specific initiatives, campaigns, or communication activities.

A strategic plan gets everyone on the same sheet of paper and guides teams, creative direction, and makes sure that every post, pitch, and press release moves the brand/ organization closer to its goals. In the world of social media and PR, this planning is crucial because audiences expect authenticity and clarity.

A possible blueprint for communication planning is the GhOSTE plan:

G — Goal: The overarching ambition of the plan, tied to mission and vision. Usually, statements about what you want to achieve

h — How: The approach or guiding factor behind your plan.

O — Objective: Specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound outcomes.

S — Strategy: The general approaches or methods you will use to achieve your objectives.

T — Tactics: The individual actions or campaigns that bring the strategy to life.

E — Evaluation: How success will be measured and what metrics will be tracked.
